Professor Jorge L. Gardea-Torresdey in Univision

Jorge Gardea- Torresdey, Ph. D, chair for The University of Texas at El Paso’s Department of Chemistry, has been honored with the 2009 Distinguished Scientist Award by SACNAS, the Society for the Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science.

SACNAS recognized Gardea-Torresdey for his research in the field of Environmental Chemistry. Dr. Gardea-Torresdey also was recognized for his role as a mentor and his efforts to promote diversity in the sciences. While at UTEP, he has been a faculty advisor to 18 students who have earned their Ph.D.s, 15 of whom are Hispanic. To view complete story click here.

  • The group of Dr. Gardea is very happy since he has just been appointed to the Editorial Advisory Board of the most prestigious journal in the world in the field of environmental science, " Environmental Science and Technology". He will start serving in the Editorial Board on September, 2006.  Congratulations to him for this great achievement; he deserves this since he works very hard.

  • A grant for the first time from a mining company, Phelps Dodge Corporation, has been awarded to Dr. Gardea to carry out a project called, "Screening the metal uptake capacity of plant species growing at the Miami tailings reclamation project: Evaluating soil to plant elemental ratios."
